Avatars
Much of what is in this journal article about avatars in online space isn't surprising to me, but I'm pleased to see some truly scholarly research addressed to the concept outside of game studies.
A few non-game thesis' to check out in terms or representation and identity online:
FACETED ID/ENTITY: Managing representation in a digital world http://smg.media.mit.edu/people/danah/thesis/danahThesis.pdf
Shifting Images: Cyberspace, Personal Home Pages and Interpersonal Mediated-Communication
http://www.geocities.com/mediamade/honrconf.htm
and there was someone i meant to archive for you, recently stumbled upon who was doing research on identity and representaion online - but as per my earlier post on tracking online memories, it is lost in the web of pages in my head. Guess it might be time to turn my history back on.
